Matthew R. Yee was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on 11 April 1959, a year of great change in Hawaii with statehood. Matt grew up in an Asian American home. He attended Punahou School for his formative years where he developed a wonderful talent for music. He even wrote his graduation song in 1978. Matthew went on to Dartmouth College and then to a Philadelphia law school to become a lawyer.
Returning home, he put together a local band which had hits on local radio in the early 90s. He gradually put together his own show for Hawaii Public Radio as well as gay pride events from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. That’s when the cruise ships picked him up and he became quite an act in the infamous schooner bar. It was during this time that he developed a close bond with Paul Hannigan, who he eventually married on December 21, 2013. Matt’s cruise ship career took him to ports all over the world, as well as performing at private events for the last 20 years .
Sadly, in December of 2022 Matt developed liver cancer and died a year later on December 2, 2023. We will miss him greatly as a great bright star in the sky.
